Wednesday 19th September Posted: September 19, by Mairwen Guard I had some good news yesterday regarding Holly — she has successfully bonded to her new friend! I am absolutely thrilled as she failed to bond in a previous attempt and ended up with a nasty leg wound so I had given up trying her again. However, a lovely couple contacted me as they felt Holly could just be the rabbit they were looking for to bond with their male, so I agreed to give it a try and I am so glad I did. Friday 7th September Posted: September 7, by Mairwen Guard This is a strange time of year — we have just finished the rabbit pre-holiday dumping phase and have yet to enter the winter dumping phase so it is a sort of calm before the storm. Despite that we are receiving several enquiries a day regarding the off-loading of unwanted rabbits, almost all of them for totally avoidable reasons had owners given just a bit of thought to the commitment they were about to embark on, not to mention the lack of awareness of basic rabbit welfare and the complex needs of such a pet. Tuesday 31st July Posted: July 31, by Mairwen Guard Why does no one want the bunnies we have here?

The Europeans misunderstood and thought the women were referring to a geographic area; the subsequently used the word “Guinea” to describe coastal West Africa. Neighboring colonies also bore the name “Guinea.

Tweet Among the clever pranks and late nights of freshman year, I obtained three fish, none of which I actually bought. I enjoyed caring for these fish and often observed them as they swam frantically in their makeshift fishbowl perched on my desk. Even so, my time with these pets came to an end after my friend accidentally killed my two goldfish and my betta fish while petsitting them on winter break. In the wake of the murder of my fish, I ruminated over what might bring me joy after this tragic loss.

From September of to July of , I am living in Peru experiencing an amazing new culture and making memories that will last a lifetime. A district of Lima called San Borja, Peru is my new home. Upon arrival I was surprised, because more often than not my host mom would randomly tell me not to do something. She would then explain to me the reason, which would usually leave me more confused than before.
It is a cultural thing, and I suppose that every country has some superstitions specific to them because of the way they were raised. When I decided to write about superstitions, I asked many Peruvian friends to help me think of them. This is the one that I constantly face and it is flat out annoying. My host mom always yells at my host sister and I if we eat or drink anything cold when we are sick and therefore, we always do it behind her back.

It was a confusing, misguided time for me. When he broke up with me, I treated myself to a dinner out: I might have had a pork chop for dessert. In my case, being myself involves eating meat. Later, she brought it over to our house, cooked and cleaned and cut up, in an old margarine tub.
Guinea pigs are a social, herd animal. They do better in groups. A pair of guinea pigs is a better option than just one. There are a number of issues to weigh on both sides of the one or two cavy question.
My first pet as a kid was an orange-and-white guinea pig named Rodney who turned out to be a girl. No matter how many other animals I’ve loved since then, I’ve always come back to guinea pigs. They’re a little more interesting than your run-of-the-mill hamster in my humble opinion , and have a hell of a lot of personality. Best of all, they make a great addition to apartments or rental homes where it might not be feasible to adopt non-caged pets like dogs or cats.

Since the s, efforts have been made to increase consumption of the animal outside South America. Their docile nature, their responsiveness to handling and feeding, and the relative ease of caring for them, continue to make the guinea pig a popular pet. Biological experimentation on guinea pigs has been carried out since the 17th century. They continue to be a food source in the region; many households in the Andean highlands raise the animal, which subsists off the family’s vegetable scraps.
Black guinea pigs are considered especially useful for diagnoses. The animal also may be cut open and its entrails examined to determine whether the cure was effective. How the animals came to be called “pigs” is not clear. They can survive for long periods in small quarters, like a ‘pig pen’, and were thus easily transported on ships to Europe. This originally meant ” dolphin ” and was used because of the animals’ grunting sounds which were felt to be similar.
There are however many other, possibly less scientifically based explanations of the German name. The origin of “guinea” in “guinea pig” is harder to explain. They typically live an average of four to five years, but may live as long as eight years.

Tammy Raabe Get togethers like Guinea Pignics are great ways for these social creatures to interact. Tammy Raabe of Alexandria, Va. Guinea Pignics In , Raabe was already connected with guinea pig lovers worldwide through her educational website, Cavy Madness. But she wanted to meet other cavy owners and their pets in person. Her own posse of pigs, like most of their species, were social and would enjoy the interaction with other guinea pigs. Raabe, her friend Sally Hurley, and several other local enthusiasts near her then-home in Boston wanted to create something nearby that was pet-friendly and had a rescue and educational element to it.
So the Boston-area Guinea Pignic began. The events take careful planning and special precautions to keep the animals safe and owners stress-free. Raabe says as organizers, they must find an appropriate park, one with grass that has not been chemically fertilized, and that will give them a permit to hold their event there.
