Feb 23, · DuBarry patterns were printed from to by Simplicity Pattern Company. These are difficult to date because some have B, D, or T after their Pattern number. In the early ‘s the logo was a black with white lettering and featured a woman with a wig and three feathers in her hair.
Another pattern catalog, and another s multi sleeve pattern from Simplicity!! The styling of Simplicity is less than ideal, but look past the scraggly hair, the poor fit, and the boring fabric, there is a wonderful dress with great style lines. For real inspiration, just take a look at the original illustration – this is a really cute garment.
I am curious why Simplicity chose an invisible zipper in the side seam which would not be original to the design. Seems like an odd choice to me. But it does look like they have improved the length of these vintage reproductions. Happy to say this dress does not appear to have that issue. The short sleeved version is the Sew Chic “Tia Dress” pattern. If I remember correctly, the red and yellow print version is the original sample; the three-quarter sleeve is an addition to the pattern which I really like.
I have been tempted by this one for years, and now that it should be available at my local JoAnn Fabrics sometime soon, you better believe I will be picking this one up for my collection. Here we have another basic blouse. The v-neck with the dickey is sweet, but I am not loving the sample in the shiny fabric that is too big on the model.
You wouldn’t know it from looking at the sample, but this is a somewhat fitted top that has a zipper – and again, Simplicity uses the invisible option. I have metal invisible zippers on cotton twill tape from the s if the color choices are anything to go by, so they probably existed when this pattern was first released in the s, but I would guess that a home sewing pattern would not use a fairly new invention that might not be available to a home sewer.
Some, like the Rudi Gernreich Archive , consist of large groupings of objects that document the work of a specific designer. Others, like our photograph collection , are less focused groupings of objects collected to help us interpret fashion history. One of my favorite mini-collections is our collection of paper sewing patterns.

Tuesday, April 24, Simplicity Patterns for Spring Just when I thought I was over being distracted by new patterns, Simplicity goes and does this to me with their Spring collection. What an adorable little s outfit; loving the oversized polka dots! No, I don’t wear shorts, but these are making me wish that I did. I could definitely go for the skirt and tie top, though. Oh, and look, here is another fabulous vintage reproduction. I have had issues with the vintage repro halter necklines in the past, so I would probably need to do a muslin first, but that peter pan collar is calling my name.
I get a bit bored with the massive amount of vintage apron patterns that get released, but that rick-rack version looks pretty cute and it might even manage to protect clothing while in the kitchen. Evidently this is the year of the halter. I love the two tone look of this one, although I suspect this might not be the easiest garment to wear. I would have liked to see this on an actual person to help evaluate the fit.
But I do appreciate that Simplicity is continuing to release a few of the “authentic” designs with no contemporary fitting changes made to the pattern. The second of the authentic vintage patterns is this caftan.
The Longstitch binding was certainly in use in the middle ages possibly as early as the Romanesque period, certainly by the 14th century as a structure for stationery bindings across Europe, and continued to be used for small notebooks, etc, well into the 16th century. They were used for printed books by the s in Italy and were made with full-covers or guards of parchment in an unbroken line from then until the early nineteenth century. The Longstitch binding was popular in Germany throughout the sixteenth century and into the seventeenth for school and university student books, often sewn through leaves of medieval manuscript waste, they were also widely used with parchment and cartonnage covers in the Low Countries in the seventeenth century and probably earlier and survived there as the preferred binding for almanacs until at least

Make Your Own Baby Sling! Baby Z snoozing contentedly in a ring sling made by her Grandmommy Beryl I mentioned a while back that in addition to sewing up dozens of cloth diapers, my mother also made us a whole host of baby carriers for wearing little Z. And Masheka and I took an excellent free Babywearing workshop at Metro Minis in Manhattan to learn about five major types of baby carriers pouches, slings, mei tais, soft structured carriers and wraps and how to use them safely.
The safest position for small infants is an inward-facing front carry, tummy-to-tummy with baby up high enough on the sternum that you can kiss the top of her head. Baby’s head is to the side, with plenty of clearance so she isn’t chin-to-chest. The above is one of the ring slings my mother made, my current favorite for around-the-house babywearing.
She just used a piece of reversible upholstery fabric she got at Jo-Ann’s with some baby-wearing-quality ring slings purchased from SlingRings. I’m not sure which one she used, but it has a pleated shoulder and a handy pocket on the tail and she tells me it was a super-easy and quick project not to mention much less expensive than commercial ring slings. Except when we’re sleeping, either Masheka and I hold and cuddle Baby Z nearly every minute she’s awake and much of the time she’s asleep.
She’s not fussy or colicky, but it’s pretty clear she far prefers lying on our chests to lying in her cosleeper or crib. So without a way to carry her hands-free, I’d be hard-pressed to even make myself a sandwich or make a phone call, and I’d be even farther behind on my email than I already am which reminds me–apologies if you’ve emailed me and haven’t heard back!
Oh, and here’s Masheka carrying Baby Z in the neutral gray mei-tai-style baby carrier my mom made in deference to his tastes.

The discovery of dyed flax fibres in a cave in the Republic of Georgia dated to 34, BCE suggests textile-like materials were made even in prehistoric times. However, for the main types of textiles, plain weave , twill , or satin weave , there is little difference between the ancient and modern methods. Uses[ edit ] Textiles have an assortment of uses, the most common of which are for clothing and for containers such as bags and baskets.
In the household they are used in carpeting , upholstered furnishings , window shades , towels , coverings for tables, beds, and other flat surfaces, and in art. In the workplace they are used in industrial and scientific processes such as filtering. Miscellaneous uses include flags , backpacks , tents , nets , handkerchiefs , cleaning rags , transportation devices such as balloons , kites , sails , and parachutes ; textiles are also used to provide strengthening in composite materials such as fibreglass and industrial geotextiles.
Textiles are used in many traditional crafts such as sewing , quilting and embroidery. Textiles for industrial purposes, and chosen for characteristics other than their appearance, are commonly referred to as technical textiles. Technical textiles include textile structures for automotive applications, medical textiles e. In all these applications stringent performance requirements must be met.
Woven of threads coated with zinc oxide nanowires , laboratory fabric has been shown capable of “self-powering nanosystems” using vibrations created by everyday actions like wind or body movements. The first three are natural. In the 20th century, they were supplemented by artificial fibres made from petroleum.
